Just as fitness of the body is important for
us similarly the fitness of the mind or mental health is crucial for
our well being too. Unless the mind is in sound health we cannot
expect to go about with living and performing as per our optimum
levels. The utmost efforts in any particular pursuit cannot be
delivered if the mind- the supreme regulator of all our activities
is not fit though the body may be fit and in perfect health. This is
why many of our aspirations and goals remain a far cry from us only
due to an unsound mind.
Importance of fitness of the mind
Indian philosophy says that the mind is like the charioteer who
harnesses and conducts the movements of the various horse-like body
organs. So, each and every organ and body part capable of voluntary
action is merely a slave to the will of the mind. It thus becomes
important to ensure that the mind is free from any chronic or other
ailments blocking the process of clear thinking and reasoning and
acting as a hindrance in the path of providing the impetus to
function logically.
Ensuring fitness of mind
We
can understand that attaining and maintaining fitness of the mind is
an important mission for us all to achieve. In this mission
exercises serve as a worthy means to accomplishment. Various
exercises can be practiced with an aim to achieve fitness of the
mind, enhance concentration levels and bring about a peaceful
harmony of the mind and body.
Exercises like traditional Yogic exercises are renowned the world
over for bringing forth fitness of the mind. The essence of Yoga is
to unite the individual mind with the universal mind. This brings
about a healthy transformation of the mind when practiced daily and
clears out many a mental block stemming from selfish, unreasonable
and illogical thoughts, superstitions and beliefs.
There is also the role of a healthy diet in promoting a healthy
mind. A diet rich in vitamins and minerals alongside other nutrients
serves as health food and also acts as a nerve and brain tonic.
Besides there is the important role of adequate rest which provides
the necessary relaxation of the mind for it to rejuvenate itself.
